Alliant Techsystems Inc. received a $21.1 million contract to supply nonstandard weapons and parts through ATK Small Caliber Systems in Independence.
The contract will be fulfilled at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence by ATK, a division of Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK), based in Edina, Minn. [Eden Prairie]
Alliant Techsystems spokeswoman Amanda Covington said Tuesday that this is the first contract of its kind for the plant in Independence. The local plant will not manufacture the items, which include AK-47 rifles, magazines and spare parts. Instead, representatives of the Independence plant will subcontract with weapons manufacturers in Kazanluk, Bulgaria (82 percent of the contract); Serbia (7.6 percent); Pakistan (5.6 percent); elsewhere in Bulgaria (2.8 percent); Cugir, Romania (1.5 percent); and Jamestown, Pa. (0.4 percent). The contract completion date is estimated at May 25, 2010.
Covington said the contract is similar to a $105.8 million contract the Independence plant received earlier this month to provide nonstandard ammunition, for weapons such as the AK-47, to the government of Afghanistan. The goal is to help the Independence plant diversify so it’s not as vulnerable to swings in demand from its main contractor, the U.S. Army.
