Why Alliant Techsystems?
Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) is a $3 billion+ aerospace and defense company with leading positions in propulsion, composite structures, munitions and precision capabilities. ATK, with corporate headquarters in Edina, is the largest Minnesota based military contractor. ATK was formed in 1991 when Honeywell spun-off parts of its military operations.
ATK – World's #1 Producer of Depleted Uranium Munitions
ATK has supplied the US Department of Defense with over 16 million depleted uranium (DU) shells, most of which were machined and assembled at the Twin City Army Ammunition Plant (TCAAP) in Arden Hills, MN (a Superfund clean-up site). DU munitions contain a solid depleted uranium rod inside the shell. The DU 'penetrator' inside the shells are composed of uranium-238, a radioactive, alpha emitting metallic toxic waste left over from the uranium "enrichment" process. Combined with titanium, the DU alloy is extremely dense, self sharpening and makes devastating armor piercing ammunition. The shell literally burns through armor upon impact. A report by the Army Environmental Policy Institute (AEPI) describing research on hard target testing states "As much as 70% of a DU penetrator can be aerosolized when it strikes a tank..." forming micrometer-size uranium oxide particles that can be inhaled or ingested. DU munitions were extensively used in both gulf wars and Kosovo. Many leading medical experts feel 'Gulf War Syndrome' may be caused by DU exposure, among other things. The DoD continues to deny any problem or responsibility of DU exposure by civilians or soldiers. ATK refuses to release medical studies of Depleted Uranium production workers at TCAAP.
Manufactures All Three Rocket Motors for the Trident II Nuclear Missile
ATK supplies the rocket motors for many ground and air launched tactical military missiles. ATK is the sole supplier of all three rocket motor stages for the submarine based first strike Trident II nuclear missile. The Trident program is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar motor upgrade designed to extend the life of the program for years. Each Trident submarine carries over eight times the total number of explosives used in World War II by all parties, including the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. ATK will 'deliver' the next nuclear holocaust.
Landmines, Cluster Bombs and the XM25 - It Shoots Around Corners!
At one time Alliant Techsystems was the largest manufacturer of antipersonnel landmines in the United States. They have been the largest producer of CBU-87 cluster bombs. ATK is currently developing the XM25 Air-Burst Assault Weapon, a gun that can actually shoot, but not see, around corners.
